Sync my devices
Use your apps on your phone and your computers, and find the same lists, notes, progress and settings on each one.
Private, encrypted, and only if you want it
Sync was turned off and erased from another of your devices. Everything on this device is still here. You can start again whenever you like.
- No account. Instead of a password, you get a private sync key.
- Locked on your device. Your data is encrypted before it leaves this device, so Favabeans only ever stores locked boxes it can’t open.
- Off unless you turn it on. Without it, nothing is sent anywhere, as before.
This device already has some data
Your other devices have synced data too. What should happen?
Or use one device’s data (the other copy is kept under “Restore previous versions”):
Switch to this sync key?
This device already syncs with a different key. If you switch, it stops syncing with the old one (nothing is deleted).
Sync is on
Syncing…
Link another device
On your other device, open the camera and point it at this code, or go to favabeans.app/sync and type the key.
Keep your sync key private, like a password. Anyone with it can see your data.
If you lose all your devices and the key, we can’t recover your data, because we never have the key. It’s a good idea to keep a copy somewhere safe.
Restore previous versions
When an update from another device replaces or is combined with something here, the earlier version is kept on this device (the last 3 of each).
Nothing to restore yet.
This erases the synced copy for all your devices and turns sync off. Everything on each device stays where it is.
Copy the data from your other device here?
You opened a one-time link from your other device. It works once, for 10 minutes.
Anything replaced here is kept under “Restore previous versions” once sync is on.
Send to another device (one time)
Copy everything from this device to another one once, without turning on sync. You get a link that works once, for 10 minutes.
Open the camera on your other device and point it at this code, or send yourself the link.
Works for 10:00 more.
How it works
- Your sync key is made on your device. It is in the QR code and the link (after the “#”, which browsers never send to a server), and saved in this browser. It is never sent to Favabeans.
- Your data is encrypted on your device with that key (AES-256) before it is uploaded. Favabeans stores only the encrypted boxes, their sizes and when they changed. Even the names of the apps are disguised.
- Changes are sent when you change something, and fetched when you open a page. If the same app was changed on two devices, lists like tasks, people and foods are combined entry by entry, so nothing added on either device is lost. If the very same entry or setting was changed on both, the newest change wins. The version a device had before is kept on it under “Restore previous versions”.
- Passcode locks stay on. If People Notes or Bean Jar is locked, it is synced still locked, so you need the passcode on the other device too.
- Not synced: a timer that is running right now, the one-time hand-off from other apps to Clock Plan, and Read Shorts’ private “read today” note. Very large own decks in Read Shorts (over about 512 KB) stay on the device where you made them.
- Stopping: “Stop and erase from server” deletes the synced copy. Sync keys nobody uses for 180 days are deleted too. One-time links are deleted after one use or 10 minutes.
